“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:18
As we step into a season of gratitude and counting our blessings, it's okay to admit that you may not be feeling the holiday cheer.
Showing gratitude comes naturally when life is good, but how do we express it during times of pain, betrayal, or after experiencing tragedy?
Notice that Scripture doesn’t command us to give thanks for all circumstances, but in them. True thankfulness is eternity-minded, rather than being a mask we wear to pretend everything is fine when it isn’t.
When we look at our situation through the lens of eternity, our perspective shifts:
God is still good even when our circumstances make little sense.
God is still faithful even when obstacles block the path.
God is still near even when the crushing weight of grief overwhelms us.
Living with an eternal mindset means acknowledging that while we may never understand the why behind the storm, we know the One who rules over it. Giving thanks in the hardship is a deliberate decision to anchor your heart to an unchanging God when everything around you is uncertain.
If you are in a difficult season right now, release yourself from the pressure to fake it just because of a holiday. Trying to force superficial gratitude when life is hard creates emotional tension and physical stress.
Right now, you may not have the capacity to thank God in the struggle, but you can choose to fix your eyes on Jesus, the Prince of Peace, and find refuge in His grace.
Take a deep breath, go easy on yourself on the hard days, and remember that your story is still unfolding in His hands.
